CASA CASTAGNA

On a glorious day we arrived at Pisa, collected our hire car, and were soon on our way. The drive to Monterchi was simple and soon we saw the town, the houses clinging to the famous hump like ants on their hill. Passing the town we weaved our way through gently folding hills until we reached an unmade road, known locally as the 'white road'. As we climbed we left a plume of dust in the still hot afternoon air, and all that could be heard was the sound of the car engine and a hundred tweeting birds.

Entering Fonaco and turning left by the church we came upon the beautiful frontage of Casa Castagna, and were immediately struck by the warmth and welcome it exuded. Stepping out of the car into the glorious warm sun, we walked through the double front gates and into a wonderland. In front of us was a lush lawn with a beautiful shady fig tree and beyond that a terrace. And what a terrace! Flanked by local terracotta planters containing a variety of colourful shrubs it looked out over hundreds of acres of chestnut forest, stretching across the horizon and down into the valley below.

When we arrived at Casa Castagna we had a packed itinerary planned, for this is an ideal jumping-off point for Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Orvieto, Assisi, Perugia and so on. But when we woke up the first morning and heard nothing but birds singing; when we drove to the local supermarket and saw only three cars; when the proprietor asked us to stay for a coffee and a chat; then we knew we were seeing the real Italy. The Italy the Italians know.

So before long we had slowed down, chilled out, and began to do things the Italian way. And been accepted by them as very welcome 'stranieri'. This is the real charm of Casa Castagna - a chance to experience the genuine Italian Italy.

We stayed in  your apartment for six nights and we just wanted to let you know that we had a wondereful time there. The house is absolutely beautiful.

Anna and Carlo were very kind, we also had the pleasure in meeting Marcello and sampling some of his lovely wine! We also went to the new country club for swimming, and the massage treatment and therapy rooms were brilliant.

We had a fantastic holiday and hope to return one day. Thank you very much.
